speaker2_bio | Hi, I'm Trinity Otero and I can't stop creating. My happy place is right in the middle of strategy and creativity. I laid out my first page when I was 16 in yearbook class and never looked back. I started to design for the Orlando community in local government 20 years ago. In this time, I’ve earned unicorn status by working with private and public sectors, small businesses, and non-profits. I’ve project managed, client developed, event coordinated, and still continue to learn new things daily. I believe we all have a responsibility to use our own unique talents and passions to make the world a better place. I won't settle for surviving; I choose to thrive. |
Abstract Text | The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized its Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) on December 16, 2021, establishing a host of new communications requirements for water utilities of all sizes, including those without lead service lines present in their systems. Recognizing the necessity for utilities to communicate about lead and the opportunity for these communications to strengthen public trust, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) assembled a project steering committee comprised of leading communications professionals from across the U.S. and hired HDR to develop a communication guide and resources. AWWA’s Lead Communications Guide & Toolkit provides guidance and tools to help water utilities leverage the issue of lead in drinking water to build and strengthen public trust. This presentation will provide an overview of the Guide & Toolkit, including lead communication best practices, LCRR communication requirements, adaptable communication tools, and case studies and examples from utilities across the United States and Canada. Firsthand experiences and lessons learned from water utilities will be shared throughout the presentation. Topics include strengthening public trust, communicating about the risk of lead, outreach to disadvantaged, underserved, and hard to reach populations, sharing lead service line inventory data, communicating lead service line removal and replacement programs, contextualizing water treatment, sampling and monitoring instructions, and working with school and child care facilities. |
